We were on our way home after 3 weeks driving around Nova Scotia, and we stopped overnight in St. John. We looked for a nearby restaurant, and The Old S. George came up, and our decision was 'why not?'. We had no trouble finding the place, and what we found was unlike any restaurant we have visited in many years. If you are looking for atmosphere, ambiance, or fancy decor, it's not here, but this restaurant is a place to eat at very reasonable prices. The building is an old Anglican church. From the outside it looks like you would expect an old church to look, a bit shabby, but still handsome. We went in and found what I recognized as a parish hall with several tables set up. To one side of the restaurant area we could see the church itself. Decor was nearly non-existent, with only a mural representing Saint George and the Dragon painted on the wall. We were seated immediately and presented with menus. That's when the surprise started. The menu offers basic appetizers and entrees, with a few desserts. The chef's sense of humor is on display in the specials named for the Apostles. He relates the ingredients to the Apostle's role in the Scriptures. The prices are low - as low as I have seen anywhere. Our order was delivered quickly, the food was good, wholesome, portions were generous, and it tasted good. Fancy presentation? Forget it, you come here to eat, not look. I had a pork chop, nicely spiced and cooked without drying out, while my wife opted for liver and onions - a dish that is becoming hard to find anywhere except at your local diner. It too was well prepared and tasty (At least my wife says so, I wouldn't touch liver on a bet). The bill for our meal came to less than $25 Canadian. Unbelievable for good food.I received a nice bonus during the visit. We were chatting with one of the staff who by coincidence had a family member who lived quite near us in the US. I expressed curiosity about the church, and she invited me on a tour. The church is still used as a non-denominational wedding chapel and is still kept in its original Anglican decor. The stained glass windows are beautiful, and are representative of a period when stained glass was in its glory. The altar triptych is particularly handsome and represents a part of the Anglican Eucharist in which the congregation is called to "draw near with faith". If you are interested, try to get a tour. The time spent will be worth it.To sum it up, The Old Saint George is unique. If you are in Saint John and looking for a simple but wholesome meal, this is the place for you. Enjoy it!
The service is friendly. The menu is large. A high proportion of the items are deep fried. I ordered the 2 piece fish and chips. The chips were fine but there were way too many of them. The pieces of fish were exceptionally large and coated in what appeared to be a bread crumb coating. The fish was over cooked. The plate was piled so high that it was actually difficult to eat the fish. My lunch companion had the BLT platter with onion rings. She pronounced the sandwich as excellent. The amount of onion rings on her plate made the sandwich look small. We were offered take out containers for what we did not eat. Needless to say, we did not try the desserts.
