Cafe 1839 - HAHNDORF

This place has so much potential that's being wasted, the staff seemed nice however, they messed up my order and they were very slow to get out our meals even though they weren't busy at all.

I visited Hahndorf as part of a day tour with See Adelaide and was given free time to wander around. After strolling down the street I decided to stop in at Cafe 1839. The lady who served me was friendly and welcoming. I sat outside and it's one of the more beautiful places I've had coffee in. The coffee was nice and was certainly what I needed by mid morning.

A nice looking place and an offer of coffee and cake for $7 - Apple Pie, Lemon Cheesecake, Vanilla Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake or Waffles, was the enticement. None of the cakes were homemade and in actual fact the Lemon Cheesecake was still partially frozen and the Apple Pie was zapped in the microwave came out soggy. Looked like they may have had a kitchen hand by the name of Sara Lee. Not really in keeping with what is on offer in other cafes. A bad choice on our part.

Decided to have the coffee and cake $7 special. Wasn't very busy there, we sat outside and noticed a bottle of water and glasses not cleared from the table. So we moved them to the side. Went in and ordered, the lattes that came out were nice although not that hot and niece loved the hot chocolate. After waiting a while we reminded the staff of our cake order. Were presented with our slices of vanilla and strawberry cheesecake which we're basically from supermarket cheesecakes from the freezer section. Pretty disappointed and kicking ourselves for not going somewhere else. We did finish our order but it's not something we would have chosen if we knew the type of product being served beforehand.

Although the meal was nice, it took a very long time to get it to the table. Others from our party ordered before us, and I had managed to finish half of the burger before theirs had even shown up. If you have a lot of time, and don't mind sitting around waiting, this is the place for you. All the ingredients were fresh on the burger, but I couldn't help but notice the fish was over cooked. Simple spring rolls took the longest, and appeared to be 'blind' when brought to the table. All in all, an acceptable meal, but wouldn't rush back, taken all the options available in the area.
