Meal Type: Dinner Price per Person: $10–20 Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 I recently had a delightful dinner at this restaurant! The food was exceptional, earning a perfect score of 5. Every dish we ordered was flavorful and well-prepared. The service was equally impressive, with attentive and friendly staff who made our experience truly enjoyable. The atmosphere was inviting and pleasant, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing evening. Overall, I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a satisfying meal at a great price!
Since it was my first visit, I waited in the takeout area before moving to the dining section to sit down. When I asked one of the servers for a menu, she looked at me as if I were from another planet! I asked a Puerto Rican friend for a recommendation and she suggested the arroz con gandules y carne frita, which I ordered to go. After seeing positive reviews, I opted for the shrimp mofongo, excited to hear it was packed with meat. Another friend mentioned it would come with rice and beans. When my meal arrived, I was perplexed. There were no rice and beans, nor was there the hearty meat dish I expected. Instead, I received a piping hot, soup-like gravy with a few shrimp, a small salad with two tomato wedges, and a bowl made from plantains filled with shrimp. While the dish was decent, I likely won't order it again because the plantain bowl felt excessive. It would have been better with a larger serving of the soup gravy and some rice and beans to mix it with. However, I did enjoy the El Yucateco red chile hot sauce, which I accidentally poured too much of, leaving me sweating while I savored the shrimp. I also ordered the pork mofongo to go, but when I got home and checked, there was no meat at all—just a salad and a plantain ball that I hope has meat in it. Next time, I might try the steak and onions, which another server recommended, but we’ll see. The arroz con gandules y carne frita was good, especially with the yellow rice, though it definitely needed hot sauce. I’ve been told I should try Freddy and Tony's in Philly as well as Old San Juan and Latin America in Camden. I think I’ll visit Freddy and Tony's next since it has a different owner. If there were more Uber/Lyft options around the Walter Rand center, I might give this place another shot, but I’m likely to check out Old San Juan and Latin America first to see which has the best Puerto Rican offerings.
My wife and I started with beef empanadas as our appetizer, which were freshly made and quite tasty. For the main course, we both ordered shrimp mofongo served with yellow rice, beans, and shrimp sauce. There was an abundant amount of shrimp in this dish—definitely no skimping here! Our waitress informed us that there would be about a 25-minute wait for our meals due to the influx of takeout orders at the time. Once our food arrived, I drizzled the shrimp sauce over everything, enhancing the flavors of the mofongo and yellow rice. Just a heads up—the mofongo is quite substantial, so you might find it difficult to finish in one sitting! One important note: Freddy's only accepts cash; credit and debit cards are not accepted. There is an ATM located in the takeout area of the restaurant for your convenience.
