California 50's Dinner - Bucharest

You go there a lot for the atmosphere. The interior decorations are great and make you really believe you in a diner in the 1950s. The music is not quite traditional, but works. The food is average and also the drinks. Prices are normal, affordable.

I visited Califonia 50's diner 3 times with my family from January '16. The place has an American desire charm with 50-60's stylish furniture and general appearance. The staff is usually friendly and welcoming. The first surprise appears as you explore the menu: besides the obvious burgers and milkshakes you can see a series of traditional Italian courses that look at at at least bizarre in an American style restaurant, and if the friendly owner approaches you with its marked Italian accent You understand, you are in an Italy, still thousands of miles from US. Food is usually ok without special unforgettable courses; we took burgers and some arancini typical Sicilian snack from a pan fried rice ball with some sauce inside. Actually my children were crazy for this Arancini, so we came back to take away a few of them. Last time we were there, I ordered by person the snack in the night and we took the following day, but... the price at the moment of the order was 9 Lei and by magic it rose by 55%!!! on the following day without advice. Yes, the price changed from 9 to 14 Lei and of course I complained for the change. The owner replied that he was not responsible for the price increase decided by his accountant; he then gave it the increasing cost of basic material and he showed a cheap brand bag of Parmesan cheese and the need to increase his income. Note to readers: Romania has recently reduced the value of VAT from 24 to 9 % to food and non-alcoholic beverages. I think it would have been right at least to advise us at the time of the order, as we already bought the snack for the third time. Last unpleasant surprise was when paying: I paid in cash with a banknote that exceeds the total cost....and I have no change back! Yeah, the waitress didn't give me money back and kept the tip on her. I am completely disappointed with the way I have been treated, and I have no intention of returning there.

Looking for anamerican burger in an american atmosphere? This is the place to be! I mean the burgers were great, cooked just the way I wanted and the place looked exactly as an american diner should. Even the waitresses were dressed appropriately.

Hear about this place from someone talking on the radio and, of course, had to check it out. The place looks and feels like an authentic american dinner, taken from the 50 's 70 's years. The food is great, really good burgers and ribs. I don 't know if all the waitresses go aroung in roller blades there, but it was a plus to the whole american experience. Ah, yes. And the music, all 50 's 70 's rocn 'n 'roll. Pretty nice :D
