Barnwell Caribbean

I’ve got a treat for you—Barnwell Caribbean—if you’re into down home authenticity, good food, live entertainment and some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Last night I performed in Aiken, South Carolina and this morning rolled through Barnwell en route to Port Royal for an afternoon gig when I stopped at this spot for breakfast. Weds thru Sunday the restaurant does breakfast 6:30am to 11:00am, featuring typical Southern-style fare. I opted for the fried fish and grits. And it was right on. When I pressed the restaurant owner, Tim, about the seasoning and batter on the fish he responded “ I can’t tell that secret but it goes back a ways.” When they aren’t serving breakfast and lunch, the establishment hosts live entertainment—karaoke, gospel, Country Western and more. Best part: every person I chatted with was super friendly. This spot is likely only well revered locally, but its down home, kind essence is something every large chain and bougie national retailer wishes it had. Barnwell Caribbean is the real deal.

I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. The food was the worst I've ever had, and the customer service was quite poor. The wait time was excessively long, and they closed too early. The cleanliness was also concerning, as there seemed to be no staff to clean up after customers left - tables were left messy. For the price of $50–100 per person, I expected much better. I dined here for dinner and found the overall experience to be quite satisfying. The food was outstanding, earning a solid 5 out of 5. Every dish was flavorful and well-prepared, making it a highlight of the evening. However, the service was a bit lacking, which I rated a 3. While the staff was friendly, the service felt a bit slow and disorganized at times. As for the atmosphere, I also gave it a 3. While the setting was pleasant, it lacked a bit of charm and warmth that would enhance the dining experience. Overall, I spent around $20–30 per person, and I would recommend this place primarily for the great food!
